The Banach Scholarship Programme is a joint scholarship initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA), implemented under the framework of the Polish development aid. The aim of the Programme is to support the socio-economic development of the following countries: Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, as well as the following Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia by raising the educational status and professional qualifications of their citizens.

Stefan Banach - a highly regarded Polish mathematician, co-founder of the Lviv School of Mathematics and a branch of mathematics called functional analysis. He authored more than 60 scientific works and created many mathematical theorems of fundamental importance. Since 2013, the Polish government offers foreign students a scholarship named after this outstanding Polish scientist.

The Programme participants are:

  • entitled to undertake and carry out second-cycle studies financed from the scholarship (in the field of engineering and technical sciences, agricultural sciences and exact and natural sciences),
  • exempted from the fees applicable at public HEIs,
  • entitled to complete a month-long linguistic and adaptive course or a year-long preparatory course.

The candidates themselves select the university and the field of study, based on the educational offer of Polish public higher education institutions. The course aims to improve the participants’ linguistic competence in Polish as well as their knowledge of Polish history and culture and in the case of the preparatory course – also knowledge of subjects related to the course of their future studies. The costs of the courses and scholarships during the course will also be covered by NAWA as part of the budget for scholarship programmes. The language of instruction under the Programme shall be Polish. Final decisions regarding admissions of candidates shall be made by the HEIs.

Who is the Programme addressed to?

The Scholarship offer is addressed primarily to citizens of the countries indicated as priority countries under the Programme in the development cooperation plan for 2019, i.e.: Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, as well as the following Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia.
