If you are a PhD student and want to reach for the stars and further your academic career, you are welcome to apply for a scholarship in the second call for applications for the Iwanowska Programme. The programme funds visits to the best research centres worldwide.

The programme gives PhD students the opportunity to complete a part of their doctoral studies in foreign research centres in a country of their choice. Such a visit can last from three to even twelve months. The scholarship can amount to as much as 120 thousand PLN.

Additional funding is provided if the young researcher is accompanied by their spouse and children, and in the case of disabled persons – also by their caregivers.

The first visits can start as early as in the beginning of September 2020.

The scholarship holder’s stay at the host institution can involve:

  • completing a part of the studies related to writing the doctoral thesis,
  • carrying out research related to writing the doctoral thesis,
  • obtaining material for the doctoral thesis or a scientific publication,
  • completing a part of the “Implementation Doctorates Programme,”
  • holding classes or carrying out other scientific or academic activities related to writing the doctoral thesis.

The programme for outgoing scholars is named after Prof. Wilhelmina Iwanowska from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń – one of the founders of the University’s Astronomical Observatory in Piwnice near Toruń and the first female on the board of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

69 best applicants were granted scholarships in the 1st edition of the Iwanowska Programme. The largest groups of applications that obtained funding were in the domains of natural sciences (35), engineering and technology (13) and social sciences (8). Moreover, scholarships were granted to seven applicants in the area of medical sciences, four to representatives of the humanities and two to scholars in the domain of agricultural sciences. The most popular destinations are Germany (10), the United States (8), France (6), Australia and Spain (5 each), Denmark, the United Kingdom and Italy (4 each). Good news is that as many as 44 women were granted scholarships, which amounts to 63.76% of the winners.

We are waiting for applications in the second edition of the programme until 18 December 2019.

We hope that the Programme’s patron – Prof. Wilhelmina Iwanowska – will help the scholarship holders reach for the stars and fulfil their scholarly dreams.

Important: applications under the programme are submitted by natural persons directly, not through the institution in which they are employed or complete their doctoral studies.

The regulations and detailed information and documents can be found here.

Submit your application.

"The programme provides PhD students with very good conditions for doing research, because it enables them to visit a university of their choice, gain new experience and see a foreign country. At the University of Hong Kong, I am going to carry out a project related to urban development, the spread of pollution and the improvement in the quality of city air. I am happy that I will be able to conduct research which is a part of my PhD dissertation at this particular university."
