On 9–14 February 2026, lecturers of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange took part in the first edition of Brussels Multilingualism Week, organised on the initiative of the Brussels Multilingualism Council and the European Union National Institutes for Culture network EUNIC
Brussels, a city inhabited by representatives of nearly 186 nationalities speaking more than one hundred languages, became a space for discussion on the role of multilingualism in contemporary Europe. The programme of the event included lectures, workshops, debates and meetings with translators from EU institutions and international organisations
Poland’s voice was also present in the programme. NAWA lecturers, in cooperation with the Polish Institute in Brussels, organised the lecture inaugurating a series of evening meetings devoted to multilingualism. The event took place in the historic halls of the Palais de la Bourse
Michalina Knyś from Université Libre de Bruxelles and Maciej Mielnik from Université de Mons presented to the participants the system of teaching Polish abroad as well as NAWA’s flagship programme, thanks to which the Polish language is present at 90 universities in more than 40 countries
During the week, there were also activities open to the residents of the city. NAWA lecturers organised a demonstration lesson of the Polish language in the centre of Brussels, showing that learning Polish can be accessible and inspiring. Michalina Knyś also conducted language workshops for students and staff of ULB
The event concluded with an educational fair attended by cultural institutions supported by translators of the European Parliament. NAWA lecturers once again joined forces with the Polish Institute in Brussels to promote the study of Polish in Belgium and summer language courses organised in Poland
NAWA’s presence in Brussels is another example of activities strengthening the internationalisation of Polish higher education and promoting the Polish language as a tool for academic cooperation, intercultural dialogue and relationship-building in Europe.
