Young scientists will complete fellowships at the best foreign research centres thanks to NAWA scholarships.

The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) has announced the results of the second call for applications for scholarships under the Iwanowska Programme. Scholarships have been granted to top 66 doctoral students, who will visit renowned research centres abroad. The scholarships will cover the costs of their stay. The scholarship holders were selected from among 228 applicants.

‘NAWA scholarships give young scientists the opportunity to develop international cooperation right at the beginning of their scientific career,’ says NAWA Director Dr. Grażyna Żebrowska. ‘For PhD students, it is also a unique opportunity to work on a part of their dissertation or to carry out research at the world’s best centre in a given field of science,’ adds NAWA Director.

The largest groups among the winners of the second edition of the Iwanowska Programme are researchers in the fields of natural sciences (28), then engineering and technical sciences (23) and medical sciences (7). In turn, the most popular destinations for young scientists are the United States (18), Italy (8), Germany (7), Switzerland (4), the United Kingdom (4), Denmark (3), and France (3). The group of NAWA scholarship holders consists of 41 women and 25 men.

The objective of the Programme is to promote international mobility of Polish doctoral students by enabling them to carry out research or hold classes in foreign research and academic centres around the world. Visits lasting from 3 to 12 months allow them to join recognized scientific teams and carry out projects under the direction of outstanding scientists from abroad.

The winners of the first edition admit that NAWA scholarships create very good conditions for working on their dissertations and doing research, because they give them the opportunity to go to any university in the world. Piotr Gadawski, PhD student at the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz, who was among the winners in the first edition of the Programme, says that the NAWA scholarship enabled him to fulfil his scientific dreams of a fellowship at the world’s best centre in his field of scientific interest – the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, University of Guelph in Canada. In the first edition, NAWA financed scientific visits at foreign centres of 69 doctoral students.

Congratulations to the winners of the second edition of the Iwanowska Programme!
