    Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) support researchers at various stages of their professional careers by funding research and training in Europe and beyond. At the same time, the programme enables institutions to develop their staff through the recruitment of researchers and the participation of staff in international research and training projects. The programmes included in MSCA can be carried out in any scientific discipline and can concern both fundamental and applied research. The basic requirement is the international mobility of researchers.

    MSCA is part of the European Union’s Horizon Europa programme.

    ADDRESSEES

    MSCA programmes are open to individual researchers or institutions from the European Union and beyond:

    • scientific institutions (universities, research institutes)
    • businesses (including SMEs)
    • non-governmental organisations, hospitals, museums, associations, banks, etc.
    • international organisations.

    The institution may have beneficiary status, which involves signing a grant agreement with the European Commission, employing researchers, and receiving funds directly from the EC, or the status of a partner organisation, which trains and hosts researchers for fellowships, with the costs of its participation covered by the beneficiary.

    Researchers (of any nationality and from any country) must be eligible to begin doctoral studies/open the doctoral procedure. They may not be employed at any institution at the time of applying for the fellowship. A research degree is a prerequisite for applying in one of the four types of actions under this programme.

    A broader description of the definitions used in the actions can be found in the MSCA Work Programme 2023-2024:

    GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME

    • Research areas and topics are proposed by applicant institutions and researchers. Projects are evaluated in several thematic panels by three independent experts;
    • MSCA researchers must comply with mobility rules: they may not choose a host institution in a country in which they have resided for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the deadline of the call or recruitment in the organisation participating in the project.They are employed under temporary employment contracts;
    • The emphasis is on the active participation of businesses and other non-academic sector organisations, enabling researchers to learn about the sector and to develop the competencies and knowledge to work in non-academic institutions;
    • The budgets of MSCA projects are created automatically on the basis of the number of person-months for which researchers are hosted and the rates set by the EC for the categories: (1) researchers’ remuneration plus allowances, (2) implementation of research, organisation and participation in conferences, training and courses, (3) management and indirect costs;
    • Applications are submitted electronically to the EC via the Funding & Tender opportunities portal after the opening of a given call;
    • The working conditions offered, the transparency of recruitment and career development opportunities based on the provisions of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers are taken into account in the evaluation and implementation of projects.

    More information about the actions can be found on the website of the European Commission and in the above mentioned Work Programme 2023-2025.

    More helpful information for new applicants can be found also on the website of the National Contact Point.
