  • European science ministers met in Warsaw this week. They have endorsed the Warsaw Declaration, proposed by the Polish presidency. In the document they are calling for an ambitious and effective funding programme for research and innovation – a crucial condition for a competitive, technologically independent, and secure Europe.

The declaration emphasises that science requires a bold budget to ensure that research outcomes and innovations strengthen the EU’s competitiveness, national economies, and the ability to tackle global challenges.

Later this year, the European Commission will present proposals for research and innovation funding beyond 2027, which will become a key topic in political negotiations as part of the EU’s next multiannual financial framework.

EU ministers responsible for science came to Warsaw to discuss its strategic role for the development of research and innovation, and strengthening the competitiveness of the EU. However, many concerns are raised by the potential inclusion of the future framework program in the so-called Competitiveness Fund. The meeting in Warsaw was an important step towards ensuring stable and predictable financing for European science after 2027.

Warsaw is sending a strong message. We remind Europe that science and innovation have guided us through many crises and will do so again. Our researchers and innovators are our competitive advantage - we must trust them and create the best possible conditions for their work - Marcin Kulasek, Minister of Science and Higher Education
