The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange hereby announces a call for applications for programmes that support international academic mobility.
Bekker NAWA (The Bekker Proghramme) and Ulam NAWA (The Ulam Programme) are two programmes under which NAWA grants scholarships to individual scientists. Their objective is to support the beneficiaries’ international research projects. Bekker NAWA is directed at PhD students and scientists working at Polish universities and in Polish research institutes. Ulam NAWA, in turn, is dedicated to scientists with a degree of PhD or higher who are working abroad (including Polish citizens).
‘The two programmes support international mobility of Polish scientists and strengthen the internationalisation of our science and higher education. The Bekker NAWA programme gives PhD candidates and scientists who pursue their education or research at Polish scientific institutions the possibility to go on a fellowship to the world’s best academic and research centres. The Ulam NAWA programme, in turn, offers our universities and scientific and research institutes the opportunity to invite outstanding foreign researchers as collaborators,’ explains NAWA Director Dr. Grażyna Żebrowska. ‘The progress of science as well as the improvement of the quality of education and research require an exchange of ideas and good practices. At times, it is necessary to look at a research or didactic problem from another perspective. This is something that NAWA scholarships offer both researchers at Polish research centres who go on fellowships abroad and scientists who come to Poland and share their experiences with teams at Polish universities or institutes,’ Dr. Grażyna Żebrowska emphasises.
The Bekker Programme
This is the fourth edition of the Bekker NAWA programme. The call for applications will be open from 25 March to 25 May 2021. Submissions will be collected via NAWA’s electronic system at www.nawa.gov.pl. A novelty in this year’s edition is that also PhD students are eligible to apply for a scholarship under the programme. The objective of the programme is to support international mobility of PhD candidates, scientists and academic teachers by means of enabling them to pursue their scientific development at foreign academic and research centres around the globe. The programme is open to PhD students and scientists representing all scientific domains. Research visits can last between 3 and 24 months and have to commence between 1 March 2022 and 1 October 2022. The programme offers scientists at the outset of their careers the chance to complete valuable postdoctoral fellowships, and PhD students – to complete a part of their education. Under Bekker NAWA, the beneficiary receives a scholarship covering their subsistence expenses related to the stay at a foreign host institution as well as a mobility allowance. The programme budget is PLN 28 million.

The Ulam Programme
This will be the third edition of the Ulam NAWA programme. The call for applications will be open from 25 March to 15 June 2021. Submissions will be collected via NAWA’s electronic system at www.nawa.gov.pl. A novelty in this year’s edition is that also Polish scientists working abroad on a permanent basis are eligible to apply for a scholarship under the programme. The objective of the programme is to increase the internationalisation of Polish universities and scientific institutions. It involves 6 to 24-month stays in Poland by outstanding foreign scientists with a degree of PhD or higher who will increase the scientific potential of Polish higher education and scientific institutions and become engaged in the latter’s research projects and teaching activities. The programme makes it possible for universities and other scientific institutions to invite researchers from any country and representing any scientific domain (including Polish investigators working abroad). It provides a scholarship covering the stay of a foreign scientist as well as a mobility allowance. The visits of foreign scientists have to commence between 1 January 2022 and 1 October 2022. The programme budget amounts to PLN 9 million.
